"Origin" es el primer álbum de larga duración de Evanescence, aunque la banda, y especialmente la vocalista Amy Lee, lo consideran más un álbum demo que un debut de estudio propiamente dicho. Lanzado en 2000 a través de un sello local de Little Rock, Arkansas, en una tirada muy limitada de solo 2.500 copias, el disco se ha convertido en una codiciada pieza de coleccionista. "Origin" es una fascinante instantánea de la banda en su estado más primigenio, mostrando una versión más cruda, oscura y experimental de su sonido, con influencias del gothic metal, la música industrial y la electrónica.
Este trabajo contiene las primeras versiones de canciones que más tarde se convertirían en éxitos mundiales, como "My Immortal" e "Imaginary", y revela la base sobre la que se construiría el fenómeno de "Fallen". Escuchar "Origin" es asomarse al laboratorio creativo de Amy Lee y Ben Moody antes de que su visión conquistara el mundo.
Proceso de Grabación y Sonido
Grabado con un presupuesto muy limitado, el sonido de "Origin" es notablemente más crudo y menos pulido que el de sus trabajos posteriores. La producción tiene un aire de "hazlo tú mismo" que, sin embargo, logra capturar la ambición de la banda. El sonido es una amalgama de guitarras de nu metal pesadas, atmósferas de sintetizador góticas, coros de iglesia y la poderosa voz de Amy Lee, que ya mostraba su increíble rango y emotividad.
A diferencia de sus álbumes posteriores, "Origin" presenta un uso más prominente de elementos electrónicos y de música industrial, así como voces masculinas de death metal en la canción "Eternal", influencias que se suavizarían en su debut comercial. Análisis de Canciones
"Origin": La canción que da título al álbum es una introducción instrumental corta y atmosférica que establece el tono gótico del disco, utilizando un sample de la película "My Cousin Vinny".
"Whisper": Una de las canciones más potentes y representativas del sonido inicial de la banda. Esta versión es más cruda y electrónica que la que aparecería en "Fallen". Con sus coros en latín y su agresividad, muestra las raíces de metal gótico del grupo.
"My Immortal": La versión de "Origin" de esta icónica balada es más sencilla que la famosa versión de "Fallen". Presenta una producción más directa, con el piano y la voz de Lee en primer plano, sin los arreglos de cuerda que se añadirían más tarde. Para muchos puristas, esta versión captura la emoción de la canción de una forma más pura.
Lanzamiento y Legado
Con solo 2.500 copias prensadas y vendidas en conciertos locales y a través de la web, "Origin" es extremadamente raro. Nunca tuvo un lanzamiento comercial a gran escala y, por lo tanto, no entró en ninguna lista de éxitos. Su legado, sin embargo, es inmenso. Es el "Santo Grial" para los fans de Evanescence, un documento que muestra el ADN de la banda.
