Speak and spell es un álbum de Depeche Mode, publicado en 1981. El disco incluye 12 canciones, entre ellas «New life», «I sometimes I wish I was dead», «Puppets» y «Boys say go!».

"Speak & Spell" es el primer álbum en la discografía de Depeche Mode, la banda británica de música electrónica fundada en 1980. Lanzado al mercado el 5 de octubre de 1981 por el sello Mute Records, contó en las tareas de producción con la colaboración del fundador del sello, el británico Daniel Miller."Speak & Spell" fue el único álbum de Depeche Mode en contar con Vince Clarke como miembro. Clarke, quien después triunfaría con la banda Erasure, fue precisamente el que escribió la mayoría de los temas de este primer álbum de Depeche Mode.
A diferencia de los álbumes posteriores del grupo, compuestos por Martin Gore y que poseían un aire más oscuro, las composiciones de "Speak & Spell" resultaban más ligeras y sencillas de asimilar por parte del público.
Este álbum debut de Depeche Mode alcanzó el puesto número diez en las listas de éxitos de Reino Unido.
Se lanzaron tres sencillos del álbum, siendo "Dreaming of Me" el primero de ellos. Publicado el 20 de febrero de 1981 en Reino Unido, no llegó a ser estrenado al otro lado del Atlántico.
"New Life" fue el segundo sencillo. Lanzado el 13 de junio de 1981, resultó ser un gran éxito en Reino Unido, aupándose hasta el puesto número once de las listas británicas. Este tema tampoco fue editado como sencillo en Estados Unidos.
El tercer y último corte del álbum fue "Just Can't Get Enough", estrenado el 7 de septiembre de 1981. Publicado a ambos lados del Atlántico, se convirtió en un gran éxito, alcanzando el octavo puesto en las litas británicas de éxitos.
El vídeo de "Just Can't Get Enough" fue el primero de la banda. Dirigido por el realizador Clive Richardson, es también el único en el que aparece Vince Clarke.
