Con Notorious, de 1986, Duran Duran se reinventa como un trío tras la marcha de Andy Taylor y Roger Taylor. Para este trabajo, la banda decide explorar un sonido mucho más sofisticado, con una profunda influencia del funk y el R&B. Para ello, colaboran estrechamente con el productor y guitarrista Nile Rodgers, quien se convierte en una pieza clave del nuevo sonido.
El álbum es una obra de pop-funk de una elegancia y un "groove" extraordinarios. Las líneas de bajo de John Taylor, siempre un pilar de su música, se vuelven aún más protagonistas, y la guitarra de Nile Rodgers aporta una rítmica irresistible. El sonido es más maduro y menos adolescente que en su etapa anterior.
La que da título al disco, "Notorious", es un clásico inmortal del funk-pop, con una sección de vientos espectacular y un estribillo inolvidable. "Skin Trade" muestra su faceta más soul, con una increíble interpretación vocal de Simon Le Bon.
Aunque el álbum no alcanzó las ventas estratosféricas de sus predecesores, fue un éxito de crítica y demostró la increíble capacidad de Duran Duran para evolucionar y para crear música de una calidad excepcional.
