El tercer álbum de estudio, titulado simplemente Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, marcó un cambio significativo en el sonido de la banda. En este trabajo, los escoceses decidieron aparcar momentáneamente su enfoque más guitarrero para abrazar los sintetizadores y las texturas electrónicas, creando un disco eminentemente nocturno, oscuro y orientado a la pista de baile de una manera mucho más explícita.
La producción del álbum es clave para entender su carácter. La banda trabajó para crear un sonido que evocara la noche, desde la anticipación de la salida hasta la euforia de la madrugada y la melancolía del amanecer. Canciones como "Ulysses", con su ritmo pulsante y sus sintetizadores sucios, o la épica "Lucid Dreams", que muta en una pieza de acid house, son ejemplos perfectos de esta nueva dirección.
El álbum se estructura en dos mitades conceptuales. "Tonight" es un álbum audaz y cohesivo que demostró la voluntad de la banda de reinventarse.
