El primer álbum en la discografía de Placebo toma precisamente el nombre de esta banda británica de rock alternativo. Lanzado al mercado el 17 de junio de 1996 por el sello discográfico Virgin, es el único álbum grabado por Placebo con el baterista Robert Schultzberg antes de su salida del grupo.
El álbum "Placebo" obtuvo un considerable éxito en el país de origen de la banda, alcanzando el quinto puesto en las listas de éxitos de Reino Unido.
De este álbum debut de Placebo se extrajeron cinco sencillos, con éxito igualmente notable. Entre ellos, destacaron "Nancy Boy" y "36 Degrees".
