Abbey Road, lanzado en 1969, es el undécimo álbum de estudio de The Beatles. Aunque "Let It Be" fue lanzado después, este fue el último álbum que la banda grabó junta, y funciona como su verdadero y majestuoso canto del cisne. El camino hasta el estudio
Después de las desastrosas y tensas sesiones de "Get Back" (que se convertirían en el álbum "Let It Be"), Paul McCartney se acercó a George Martin con la idea de grabar un último álbum "como en los viejos tiempos", con disciplina y la sofisticación de producción que los había caracterizado. Martin aceptó con la condición de que la banda se comportara y trabajara de forma colaborativa. El resultado fueron las sesiones de grabación de "Abbey Road", que tuvieron lugar en el verano de 1969 en un ambiente mucho más positivo y profesional.
El álbum es un momento clave de la producción de audio. Fue el primer y único álbum de The Beatles grabado íntegramente en un equipo de ocho pistas, lo que permitió una mayor complejidad en los arreglos. También destaca por el uso prominente del sintetizador Moog, uno de los primeros en la música popular, que añade texturas únicas a varias canciones.
El estilo musical
Musicalmente, "Abbey Road" es una obra de rock pulido y sofisticado. La primera cara es una colección de canciones individuales de una calidad excepcional. La segunda cara es la que define el álbum: un largo medley de rock progresivo en el que fragmentos de canciones se entrelazan para crear una suite continua, una idea de McCartney y Martin para dar uso a las muchas canciones inacabadas que tenían. Las canciones clave
La primera cara contiene clásicos inmortales. "Come Together", de Lennon, es un rock de ritmo pesado y letra surrealista. Le sigue la que Frank Sinatra llamó "la mejor canción de amor jamás escrita", la majestuosa balada de Harrison "Something". "Oh! Darling" es un rock and roll de los 50 en el que McCartney ofrece una de sus interpretaciones vocales más desgarradoras. "Octopus's Garden" es la encantadora contribución de Ringo.
El medley de la cara B comienza con "You Never Give Me Your Money" y fluye a través de una serie de viñetas musicales que culminan en el épico final de "Golden Slumbers", "Carry That Weight" y, apropiadamente, "The End", que incluye el único solo de batería de Ringo en un disco de The Beatles y un espectacular duelo de solos de guitarra entre McCartney, Harrison y Lennon.
