El tercer álbum de estudio, A Night to Remember, de 1989, muestra a una Cyndi Lauper que busca evolucionar hacia un sonido de pop-rock más maduro y sofisticado. Este disco se aleja del new wave más juguetón de sus inicios para abrazar una producción más pulida y orientada al pop adulto contemporáneo. El álbum cuenta con la colaboración de importantes compositores y productores de la época.
El sonido del disco es potente y está dominado por las baladas y los medios tiempos. El gran éxito del álbum, "I Drove All Night", es una espectacular power ballad (escrita por Billy Steinberg y Tom Kelly, y que Roy Orbison había grabado antes) que demuestra el increíble poderío vocal de Cyndi Lauper.
Pese a la calidad de las canciones, el álbum no logró el mismo impacto comercial que sus dos predecesores, especialmente en Estados Unidos. 'A Night to Remember' marca el final de su primera etapa de éxito masivo.
