El segundo álbum de estudio, True Colors, de 1986, tenía la difícil tarea de dar continuidad al fenómeno que fue 'She's So Unusual'. En este trabajo, Cyndi Lauper presenta una obra más madura, con un sonido de pop-rock muy pulido y un enfoque en la balada. El disco busca consolidar su estatus como una artista seria y una de las grandes vocalistas de su generación.
El álbum está dominado por la que sería una de sus canciones más icónicas y universales: "True Colors". Esta balada, de una belleza y una sencillez sobrecogedoras, se convirtió en un himno de autoaceptación y en un símbolo para la comunidad LGTBQ+ y otros colectivos marginados.
