Sobre el álbum
Con On the Third Day, de 1973, la ELO entrega una de sus obras más roqueras y progresivas. Por lo tanto, en este tercer álbum, la banda, liderada por Jeff Lynne, endurece su sonido y se adentra en territorios más complejos y experimentales. De hecho, es el primer disco en el que utilizan una orquesta sinfónica completa, aunque solo en algunas de las canciones.
En consecuencia, el sonido del álbum es una fascinante mezcla de hard rock, rock progresivo y los característicos arreglos de cuerda de la banda. La producción es potente y busca un sonido grandilocuente y épico. Como resultado, el disco es uno de los favoritos de sus seguidores más amantes del rock.
Además, el álbum contiene la espectacular versión del clásico de Edvard Grieg, "In the Hall of the Mountain King", que demuestra su increíble capacidad para fusionar el rock y la música clásica. Por otro lado, la canción "Showdown" es un ejemplo perfecto de su pop-rock con alma de soul.
