Tras cinco años de silencio, Cloud Nine marcó el regreso triunfal y espectacular de George Harrison a la primera línea de la música. Lanzado en 1987, este álbum es una pieza redonda de pop-rock, un trabajo vibrante, optimista y lleno de grandes canciones que lo devolvieron a la cima de las listas de éxitos y lo presentaron a una nueva generación.
El éxito del disco se debe, en gran parte, a la brillante producción de Jeff Lynne de la Electric Light Orchestra. Lynne ayudó a Harrison a crear un sonido a la vez clásico y moderno, que respetaba su identidad pero que sonaba perfectamente en la radio de los 80. La colaboración entre ambos fue tan fructífera que poco después formarían el supergrupo The Traveling Wilburys.
El álbum está repleto de éxitos. "Got My Mind Set on You", una versión de una oscura canción de R&B, se convirtió en un número uno mundial.
