Sobre el álbum
El cuarto álbum de estudio, 808s & Heartbreak, de 2008, es la obra más influyente, rupturista y emocionalmente devastadora de la carrera de Kanye West. Creado tras la muerte de su madre y la ruptura de su compromiso, este trabajo es una inmersión en el dolor, la soledad y la alienación, un disco que abandonó el rap para crear un nuevo lenguaje musical que definiría la siguiente década del hip-hop y el R&B.
Por esta razón, el sonido del álbum es minimalista, frío y electrónico. West utiliza de forma extensiva la caja de ritmos Roland TR-808 y, sobre todo, el Auto-Tune, pero no como un corrector, sino como una herramienta para expresar una vulnerabilidad y una melancolía robóticas. De hecho, en este disco, Kanye West apenas rapea; en su lugar, canta con una voz procesada y llena de dolor.
Consecuentemente, el álbum fue recibido con perplejidad en su momento, pero su influencia ha sido monumental. Abrió el camino para una nueva generación de artistas como Drake, The Weeknd o Travis Scott, que hicieron de la vulnerabilidad y la melodía con Auto-Tune su seña de identidad.
