El álbum What About Me?, de 1984, continúa la senda del pop de estadio y la balada adulta que tan buenos resultados le había dado a Kenny Rogers. En este trabajo, el artista vuelve a apostar por las colaboraciones estelares y por un sonido grandilocuente, muy característico de los años 80.
La canción que da título al disco es un trío de lujo, en el que Kenny Rogers une su voz a la de la cantante Kim Carnes y el cantante de R&B James Ingram. Esta poderosa balada se convirtió en un gran éxito y en un ejemplo perfecto de la música de "adult contemporary" de la época.
