Con Start from the Dark, de 2004, Europe protagoniza un espectacular y sorprendente regreso discográfico. Este trabajo es el primero de la banda tras más de una década de silencio y, lo que es más importante, el que reúne a la formación clásica, con el regreso del guitarrista John Norum. El disco es una ruptura total con su sonido de los 80.
La banda abandona por completo el glam metal y los teclados prominentes para abrazar un sonido de hard rock mucho más oscuro, crudo y pesado. La producción es moderna y contundente, y la influencia de bandas como Audioslave o The Darkness es evidente. El disco desconcertó a quienes solo los conocían por su gran éxito.
Las guitarras de John Norum vuelven a ser las protagonistas, con riffs potentes y un sonido muy actual. La voz de Joey Tempest se muestra más grave y agresiva. La canción que da título al disco es un ejemplo perfecto de esta nueva dirección.
'Start from the Dark' es una valiente y poderosa declaración de principios. Es el sonido de una banda que se niega a vivir del pasado y que decide reinventarse con una propuesta de rock del siglo XXI.
