El primer álbum de la discografía de Nirvana es este "Bleach", un trabajo publicado el 15 de junio de 1989 por el sello Sub Pop y que incluía como único sencillo el que daba título al álbum.

"Bleach" se lanzó tras la publicación de un primer sencillo debut de Nirvana, titulado "Love Buzz". Después de esa primera grabación, se encerraron en los estudios Reciprocal Recording de Seattle, junto con el productor estadounidense Jack Endino, entre diciembre de 1988 y enero del año siguiente. Tras las sesiones, finalmente publicaron su primer trabajo de estudio, con poco reconocimiento comercial, pero con buenas reseñas por parte de la crítica.

El álbum fue reeditado por Geffen Records en 1992, tras el lanzamiento del segundo álbum de Nirvana, "Nevermind". En este segundo intento de alcanzar las listas, "Bleach" se aupó en en puesto 33 de la lista Billboard 200 en Estados Unidos.

Los temas fueron escritos por Kurt Cobain con poco tiempo de antelación a las sesiones de grabación. La presión de la compañía por sacar con premura un álbum de grunge, de moda en la escena de Seattle en aquella época, provocó que los temas fueran improvisados y oscuros, mostrando cierto hartazgo.

El un principio, el álbum iba a titularse "Too Many Humans". Finalmente, el título fue cambiado por el de "Bleach" (lejía), en referencia a unos carteles públicos que aparecieron en las fachadas de los edificios en la década de los ochenta, recomendando a los heroinómanos a utilizar ese producto para desinfectar sus agujas y evitar de esa manera la propagación del SIDA. Cobain había visto esos carteles y le pareció un título adecuado para este primer álbum de Nirvana.

Antes de la publicación del álbum, el segundo guitarrista de la banda, Jason Everman, fue despedido por desavenencias en el planteamiento del grupo. Aunque en la portada forma parte de los créditos del álbum, en realidad su aportación artística fue nula al desarrollo del álbum. Se mantuvo su nombre como reconocimiento a los 600$ que Everman aportó para realizar la grabación.
