Gestación del álbum
A principios de los 70, Aerosmith se había forjado una reputación como una de las bandas más potentes del circuito de clubes de Boston. Tras ser descubiertos por Clive Davis, firmaron con Columbia Records en 1972. La grabación del álbum, con el productor Adrian Barber, fue un proceso rápido y con un presupuesto limitado. La banda intentó capturar la energía de sus directos, pero la inexperiencia en el estudio y una producción algo plana dieron un sonido que, aunque enérgico, no hacía plena justicia a su poder en el escenario. El propio Steven Tyler, inseguro sobre cómo sonaba su voz grabada, la moduló para que sonara más baja y menos estridente, algo de lo que más tarde se arrepentiría.
El sonido del álbum
El sonido del álbum es una potente mezcla de hard rock, blues rock y rock and roll. La influencia de bandas británicas como The Rolling Stones y Led Zeppelin es evidente, pero Aerosmith le añade un toque de funk y R&B que le da un "swing" único. Es un álbum dominado por la interacción de las guitarras de Joe Perry y Brad Whitford, creando riffs memorables sobre la sólida base rítmica de Tom Hamilton y Joey Kramer.
