El tercer álbum de estudio, Heart Shaped World, de 1989, es la obra que transformó a Chris Isaak de un artista de culto a una estrella internacional. Sin embargo, su éxito no fue inmediato. El álbum es un refinamiento de su sonido característico, una colección de canciones de rock and roll melancólico sobre el amor y la pérdida, pero la historia de su confirmación es tan fascinante como el propio disco. Es imposible hablar de este trabajo sin centrarse en el fenómeno de su canción más icónica.
El álbum contiene la legendaria "Wicked Game". En un principio, la canción, una balada de una sensualidad y una tristeza hipnóticas, pasó desapercibida, al igual que el resto del álbum. No obstante, todo cambió cuando el aclamado director de cine David Lynch, un admirador temprano del artista, decidió incluir una versión instrumental del tema en una escena clave de su película 'Corazón Salvaje' (1990).

Un director de una emisora de radio en Atlanta, de hecho, empezó a programar la versión original cantada, y la canción explotó de manera viral. A continuación, se grabó un icónico videoclip en blanco y negro, dirigido por Herb Ritts y protagonizado por Chris Isaak y la supermodelo Helena Christensen, que se convirtió en un clásico instantáneo de MTV.
Gracias a este éxito tardío, el álbum 'Heart Shaped World' finalmente alcanzó el estatus de multiplatino. Pero más allá de "Wicked Game", el disco es una pieza redonda de principio a fin.
