Con su segundo álbum, The Pursuit of Accidents, de 1982, la banda británica continuó desarrollando su personalísima fusión de jazz-funk y pop. Este trabajo muestra a un grupo que pule su sonido y gana en confianza, pero sin perder la energía y el virtuosismo instrumental que los caracterizaba. Es una perfecta continuación de su aclamado debut.
El disco sigue explorando la interacción entre la potente base rítmica y las melodías vocales más accesibles. El single "The Chinese Way" se convirtió en un éxito gracias a su exótico riff de sintetizador, cortesía del "quinto miembro" no oficial, el teclista y productor Wally Badarou, y a su estribillo pegadizo. La banda demostraba su capacidad para crear hits sin renunciar a la complejidad musical.
El álbum contiene piezas instrumentales de gran calidad como la que da título al disco, "The Pursuit of Accidents", donde el bajo de Mark King y la batería de Phil Gould vuelven a brillar con una fuerza arrolladora.
