Contexto: un mundo en tensión y una crítica al Sueño Americano
Tras el éxito global de Music, Madonna se encontraba en una nueva fase de su vida. Casada con el director Guy Ritchie y viviendo gran parte del tiempo en el Reino Unido, comenzó a observar su propia cultura, la estadounidense, con una mirada externa y crítica. El vídeo que desató la furia de una nación
La campaña de American Life quedó irrevocablemente marcada por el vídeo de la canción principal, dirigido por Jonas Åkerlund. La versión original era una sátira feroz y violenta de la guerra y la cultura de consumo estadounidense. Mostraba a Madonna y a un grupo de modelos de diversas etnias en un desfile de moda militarizado, que culminaba con ella lanzando una granada (que resultaba ser un mechero) a un doble del presidente George W. Bush. El vídeo se filtró a internet justo cuando comenzaba la Guerra de Irak. La reacción fue inmediata y violenta. Fue acusada de antipatriota y traidora. Ante el temor a un boicot masivo y preocupada por la seguridad de su familia, Madonna tomó la decisión sin precedentes de retirar el vídeo antes de su estreno oficial y reemplazarlo con una versión mucho más simple de ella cantando frente a las banderas del mundo. Fracaso comercial en EE.UU. y legado de culto
American Life fue el mayor fracaso comercial de la carrera de Madonna en Estados Unidos.
