Sonido: del mainstream al underground del house

Para la banda sonora de este universo oscuro y sexual, Madonna se alejó deliberadamente del pop-rock pulido de sus trabajos anteriores. Buscó un sonido más crudo, nocturno y auténtico, inspirado en la escena de clubes underground de Nueva York, de donde ella misma había surgido. Para ello, reclutó a dos colaboradores clave: Shep Pettibone y André Betts. Pettibone ya era un legendario remezclador y productor, responsable de la icónica remezcla de "Vogue". Betts era un productor más joven inmerso en la escena del hip-hop y el house.

La grabación en los Sound Works Studios de Nueva York se caracterizó por la experimentación. En lugar de componer canciones pop tradicionales, el equipo a menudo partía de largos grooves de deep house, hip-hop y R&B. Sobre estas bases rítmicas hipnóticas y minimalistas, Madonna tejía sus melodías y letras. El sonido resultante es deliberadamente frío, distante y atmosférico.
