"Master of Puppets" es el tercer álbum de estudio de la banda Metallica. Publicado el 3 de marzo de 1986 por Elektra Records, el álbum fue grabado en Dinamarca, en los estudios Sweet Silence, junto al productor danés Flemming Rasmussen, quien también colaboró con la banda en su anterior trabajo, "Ride the Lightning". Este fue el último álbum de la banda con el bajista Cliff Burton, quien falleció en Suecia a consecuencia de una accidente de autobús, durante la gira promocional del álbum.

La portada del álbum fue diseñada por Metallica y el mánager musical Peter Mensch y pintada por Don Brautigam y en ella se representa un cementerio lleno de cruces blancas atadas con cuerdas a un par de manos que las manipulan desde un cielo enrojecido y con el logo de la banda sobreimpresionado.

Considerado como uno de los mejores discos de Metallica, "Master of Puppets" alcanzó el puesto número 29 en la lista Billboard 200 y recibió grandes elogios por parte de la crítica, que alabó la música y las letras de claro contenido político. Está considerado como uno de los álbumes de heavy metal más influyentes de todos los tiempos y a él de debe, en gran parte, el afianzamiento del thrash metal de los Estados Unidos. El álbum vendió más de seis millones de copias sólo en Estados Unidos.

El tema "Disposable Heroes" es una canción contra la guerra, vista desde la perspectiva de un joven soldado cuyo destino está controlado por sus superiores. "The Thing That Should Not Be" se inspiró en los Mitos de Cthulhu creados por el famoso escritor de terror HP Lovecraft, con notables referencias directas a "The Shadow over Innsmouth" y al propio Cthulhu , que es el tema del coro de la canción. Se considera la pista más pesada del álbum, con el riff principal emulando a una bestia arrastrándose hacia el mar. Las guitarras, influenciadas por Black Sabbath, están afinadas, creando un ambiente lento y oscuro. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" estaba basada en la novela de Ken Kesey "Alguien voló sobre el nido del cuco" y transmite los pensamientos de un paciente enjaulado injustamente en una institución mental.
