Grabación y contexto

Después de la gira de ".And Justice for All", Metallica estaba cansada de la complejidad técnica de su propia música. Querían crear canciones que tuvieran más "groove" y que fueran más potentes en directo. Para ello, tomaron una decisión que cambiaría su carrera: contratar al productor Bob Rock, conocido por su trabajo con bandas de hard rock más melódico como Bon Jovi y Mötley Crüe. Esta elección fue inicialmente controvertida entre los fans del thrash.

La grabación del álbum fue un proceso largo, arduo y extremadamente costoso, que duró casi un año y costó más de un millón de dólares. Bob Rock chocó constantemente con la banda, desafiando su forma de componer y grabar. Les animó a grabar juntos en el estudio para capturar una sensación de banda en directo y presionó a Hetfield para que escribiera letras más personales y cantara de una forma más melódica.
