"Ride the Lightning" es el título del segundo álbum de estudio de Metallica y fue lanzado al mercado el 27 de julio de 1984 por el sello independiente Megaforce Records. El álbum fue grabado a lo largo de tres semanas en los estudios Sweet Silence de Copenhague (Dinamarca), contando con la producción de Flemming Rasmussen. La portada del álbum muestra una silla eléctrica sobre la que descarga un rayo que fluye desde el logo de la banda. El título del álbum fue tomado de un pasaje de la novela "The Stand", del novelista de terror Stephen King.
Aunque de un estilo claramente thrash, el álbum muestra la evolución musical de la banda y su sofisticación. Para ello, el bajista Cliff Burton toma más relevancia en la parte creativa y la composisión de los temas. Metallica introduce la guitarra acústica y armonías más complejas.
El coste total de la grabación fue asumido por el sello europeo Music for Nations, debido a que Megaforce no tenía fondos suficientes para hacer frente a todos los gastos. Este es el último álbum en el que colabora el exguitarrista principal Dave Mustaine en la composición de los temas, quien fue sustituido por Kirk Hammett.
El sencillo "Fade to Black" fue lanzado el 30 de septiembre de 1984, mientras que "Creeping Death" lo hizo el 23 de noviembre de 1984 y "For Whom the Bell Tolls" lo hizo el 31 de agosto de 1985. El primero de ellos era una potente balada, la primera de Metallica, que fue clasificada como uno de los mejores solos de guitarra por los lectores de Guitar World.
"Ride the Lightning" recibió grandes alabanzas por parte de los críticos especializados, que vieron en este segundo trabajo de la banda un esfuerzo más más ambicioso que en el anterior. El álbum fue promocionado con una gira europea titulada "Bang That Head That Doesn't Bang" a finales de 1984, una gira que saltó a Estados Unidos a principios del año siguiente. La banda se ganó su sitio en importantes festivales, como el "Monsters of Rock" y el "Day on the Green" y el álbum obtuvo un registro de seis millones de copias vendidas en todo el mundo.
