El camino hasta el estudio
Después de la gira de "Kill 'Em All", la banda, y en particular el bajista Cliff Burton, comenzó a introducir al resto de los miembros en la teoría musical. Este nuevo conocimiento fue fundamental para el desarrollo de las composiciones más complejas del álbum. La grabación tuvo lugar en los Sweet Silence Studios de Copenhague, Dinamarca, con el productor danés Flemming Rasmussen. La elección de Rasmussen fue clave, ya que su experiencia ayudó a la banda a conseguir un sonido mucho más pulido, potente y con más matices que en su debut.
Estilo y propuesta sonora
Musicalmente, "Ride the Lightning" es un álbum de thrash metal mucho más evolucionado. La banda comienza a experimentar con cambios de tempo, diferentes tonalidades y estructuras de canciones más largas y complejas. La introducción de guitarras acústicas y armonías melódicas, especialmente en la balada "Fade to Black", fue un movimiento audaz que alienó a una pequeña parte de sus fans más puristas, pero que demostró la increíble versatilidad de la banda. Líricamente, el álbum es mucho más oscuro y maduro, abordando temas como la pena de muerte ("Ride the Lightning"), el suicidio ("Fade to Black") y las plagas bíblicas ("Creeping Death").
Las canciones del álbum
El álbum se abre con la engañosamente melódica introducción acústica de "Fight Fire with Fire", que rápidamente explota en uno de los temas de thrash más rápidos y agresivos de su carrera, una advertencia sobre el apocalipsis nuclear.
