Sobre el álbum
"Simulation Theory" es el título del octavo álbum de estudio de la banda británica de rock progresivo Muse. Lanzado por los sellos Warner Bros y Helium-3 el 9 de noviembre de 2018 y con la producción de Rich Costey, Muse, Shellback, Timbaland y Mike Elizondo, conocido por sus colaboraciones con Dr.Dre y Eminem.Los temas del álbum tratan sobre la realidad virtual, las simulaciones y giran sobre la idea de que cualquier fantasía se pude hacer realidad. Las simulaciones, como indica el propio Matt Bellamy, vocalista y guitarrista del grupo, están a nuestro alrededor, forman ya parte de nuestra realidad y de nuestra vida cotidiana.
"Simulation Theory" continúa el trabajo de su anterior álbum, "Drones", publicado en 2016 y con el que ganaron el premio Grammy al Mejor álbum de rock, un álbum conceptual que trataba sobre el viaje de un ser humano desde el desasosiego por la pérdida de esperanza hasta convertirse, por obra del adoctrinamiento, en un dron humano para, finalmente, terminar desertando del sistema.
En esta ocasión nos presentan un trabajo menos oscuro que los anteriores, sumamente influenciado por la ciencia ficción y en el que hasta la imagen de la portada está inspirada en las películas retro del género, principalmete "Blade Runner" (1982), la mítica cinta protagonizada por Harrison Ford.
El álbum viene precedido de varios sencillos, el primero de los cuales, "Dig Down", fue lanzado el 18 de mayo de 2017, bajo la producción de Mike Elizondo y Muse. El tema reflexiona sobre la negatividad del mundo moderno en el que, si excavamos, podemos encontrarnos con cosas muy positivas que contrarrestan dicha negatividad, gente que es capaz de luchar por mejorar muchas cosas.
El vídeo que acompaña al sencillo, dirigido por el realizador Lance Drake, presenta a la modelo y activista Lauren Wasser, quien tiene que luchar para escapar de un edificio de alta seguridad utilizando técnicas de combate y artes marciales. El vídeo está basado en la propia historia de superación de la joven modelo de 29 años, a quien tuvieron que amputarle una pierna hace seis años por el síndrome un shock tóxico (SST) causado por un tampón en el año 2012 y que la tuvo a las puertas de la muerte. Recientemente, la joven ha perdido la otra pierna, tras años de lucha contra la infección.
El segundo sencillo de "Simulation Theory" lleva por título "Thought Contagion" y fue lanzado el 15 de febrero de 2018, sólo en formato de descarga digital. Compuesto por Matt Bellamy, la letra está basada en la teoría de los pensamientos contagiosos, pensamientos que se extienden de forma viral. El vídeo, dirigido igual que el anterior por Lance Drake, nos muestra imágenes de vampiros y zombies que en medio de calles iluminadas por neones, un vídeo que ha sido comparado con el álbum Thriller de Michael Jackson, con el fondo de una historia de amor.
"Something Human", el tercer sencillo, fue lanzado el 19 de julio de 2018. Las letras se refieren a que la vida puede sacar de nosotros la parte más bestial, pero en el vídeo se nos muestra que es necesario controlar a esa bestia para volver a mostrar nuestro lado humano.
El cuarto sencillo es "The Dark Side", publicado el 30 de agosto de 2018, es, según declaraciones de Matt, el favorito de la banda. Habla de la frustración y la soledad, temas persistentes en la discografía de Muse.
