El sexto álbum de Michael Jackson se titula "Thriller" y fue lanzado el 30 de noviembre de 1982 por el sello Epic Records en Estados Unidos y CBS en el resto del mundo. Producido por el mago de la producción Quincy Jones, con la colaboración del propio Michael, fue el álbum de mayor éxito del cantante y rápidamente se convirtió en el álbum más vendido en toda la historia. Se calcula que a nivel mundial se han vendido más de 66 millones de copias. En Estados Unidos su récord de ventas sólo ha sido superado por el álbum "Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)", de The Eagles.
Ganador de ocho premios Grammy en 1984, incluyendo el premio al Mejor álbum, el disco estuvo en lo más alto de la lista Billboard 200 durante 37 semanas. Por su parte, Quincy Jones ganó también un Grammy como co-productor del álbum "Thriller".
Tras vender más de 20 millones con su anterior álbum, "Off The Wall" (1979), Michael Jackson se puso manos a la obra con el objetivo de ser el músico más grande y vendedor de la historia. Para ello contrató un nuevo representante, el estadounidense John Branca, cuyo principal cometido era convertir a Michael Jackson en una máquina de hacer billetes.
Tras firmar el mejor contrato de la industria discográfica, el siguiente paso fue tener a su lado al mejor productor. Para ello seleccionó al afamado productor musical Quincy Jones, quien ya había producido "Off The Wall" y que estaba considerado como uno de los mejores creadores de éxitos.
Sólo quedaba dotar de contenido adecuado el álbum para llevarlo a la cima. El propio Michael Jackson se encargó de crear una gran cantidad de temas de diversos estilos. En total, trabajaron en el estudio con un total de 30 temas, de los que finalmente seleccionaron aquellos que podían gustar a un abanico más amplio de público. Los temas mostraban influencias de pop, el rock o el funk, con ritmos también muy bailables.
En las grabaciones participaron alguno de los mejores músicos, entre ellos varios miembros de la banda Toto y hasta el propio Eddie Van Halen, en un solo del tema "Beat It".
"The Girl Is Mine" fue el primer sencillo del álbum "Thriller". La canción, lanzada el 18 de octubre de 1982, fue escrita por Michael Jackson y producida por Quincy Jones y el propio Michael. El sencillo alcanzó el segundo puesto en la lista Billboard Hot 100 y llegó al octavo puesto en las listas británicas. La inspiración para este tema le llegó a Michael Jackson un día mientras veía la televisión junto a Paul McCartney. Posteriormente, en lugar de escribir la canción sobre papel, decidió registrarla en una grabadora casera, cantándola según iba surgiendo de su cabeza, para posteriormente trabajar en el estudio con este primer material.
El segundo sencillo de "Thriller" fue el titulado "Billie Jean", publicado el 2 de enero de 1983. "Billie Jean" se convirtió en uno de los sencillos más vendidos de dicho año y ayudó a catapultar las ventas del álbum. El sencillo se mantuvo en el primer puesto de la lista Billboard Hot 100 durante siete semanas. Las letras hablan de una mujer, Billie Jean, con la que el que cuenta la historia ha pasado una noche desenfrenada de amor y que, al poco tiempo, reclama la paternidad de un hijo, supuestamente fruto de dicha relación. Aunque no se confirmó, se especuló con la posibilidad de que la historia estuviera basada en vivencias reales del propio cantante.
El video debutó en la recientemente estrenada cadena musical MTV, en rotaciones constantes que aumentaron la popularidad del artista y de su obra. Dirigido por el realizador irlandés Steve Barron, nos muestra a un periodista persiguiendo al artista y que termina arrestado por espiar a una mujer, Billie Jean, entre cuyas sábanas supuestamente había estado poco antes Michael.
"Beat It" se publicó como tercer sencillo del álbum, el 14 de febrero de 1983. Escrita, al igual que las anteriores, por Michael Jackson y producida por Quincy Jones junto al propio Michael, se convirtió igualmente en un número uno, en gran medida por el vídeo musical, dirigido por Bob Giraldi. El tema está más en la onda del rock, contando con la colaboración del guitarrista de la banda de hard rock Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, que se marca un espectacular solo creado por él mismo para la ocasión.
El vídeo de "Beat It" elevó a Michael Jackson a los altares de los aficionados a la música y el baile. Un vídeo donde las coreografías, con la participación masiva de bailarines, resultaron de una vistosidad nunca vista hasta entonces. Rodado en Los Angeles, muestra a los miembros de dos pandillas callejeras, recreados por bailarines profesionales y pandilleros reales reclutados para el rodaje del vídeo.
El cuarto sencillo, "Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin", fue lanzado el 8 de mayo de 1983. Es el tema que abre también el álbum, una canción de seis minutos de duración de estilo bailable, compuesto por Michael Jackson originalmente para su hermana, La Toya, pero que Michael decidió grabar para el álbum "Off The Wall". Finalmente fue descartada en la selección definitiva y, tras regrabarla nuevamente, la incluyó en su álbum "Thriller". Las letras tratan sobre la prensa sensacionalista y las malas intenciones que habitan tras la propagación de falsos rumores.
"Human Nature, el quinto sencillo de este exitoso álbum, se publicó el 3 de julio de 1983. Compuesto por el teclista de la banda de rock Toto, Steve Porcaro, junto a John Bettis, contó con la producción, nuevamente, del rey midas de la música, Quincy Jones. La letra fue escrita por Porcaro tras una conversación con su hija, cuando al regresar ésta del colegio confiesa que un chico la había empujado. El padre razona los motivos por los que puede haber pasado eso y, una de ellas, le confiesa a su hija, es que así es la naturaleza humana.
El sexto sencillo, "PYT (Pretty Young Thing)", aparece en el mercado el 19 de septiembre de 1983. Fue escrito por el cantante y compositor ganador de dos Grammys, James Ingram, junto a Quincy Jones, con este último como productor único, Curiosamente, pese a haber alcanzado una buena posición en las listas de éxito (décimo lugar en la lista Billboard Hot 100), el artista nunca la interpretó en directo.
El séptimo y último sencillo del álbum es precisamente el que da título al disco, el sencillo titulado "Thriller". Este sencillo es conocido por su espectacular vídeo de 14 minutos rodado por el realizador estadounidense John Landis, conocido por haber rodado la comedia musical "The Blues Brothers", estrenada en 1980.
El vídeo "Thriller" muestra a Michael Jackson rodeado de zombies, con efectos sonoros como el chirriar de puertas en una ambientación de terror que hace de introducción al tema en sí. Durante las escenas que se suceden, Michael lidera el baile de un grupo de zombies en una coreografía entre divertida y terrorífica. El vídeo fue nominado para seis premios MTV Video Music Awards en 1984, de los cuales ganó tres.

Tras firmar el mejor contrato de la industria discográfica, el siguiente paso fue tener a su lado al mejor productor. Para ello seleccionó al afamado productor musical Quincy Jones, quien ya había producido "Off The Wall" y que estaba considerado como uno de los mejores creadores de éxitos.
Sólo quedaba dotar de contenido adecuado el álbum para llevarlo a la cima. El propio Michael Jackson se encargó de crear una gran cantidad de temas de diversos estilos. En total, trabajaron en el estudio con un total de 30 temas, de los que finalmente seleccionaron aquellos que podían gustar a un abanico más amplio de público. Los temas mostraban influencias de pop, el rock o el funk, con ritmos también muy bailables.
En las grabaciones participaron alguno de los mejores músicos, entre ellos varios miembros de la banda Toto y hasta el propio Eddie Van Halen, en un solo del tema "Beat It".
"The Girl Is Mine" fue el primer sencillo del álbum "Thriller". La canción, lanzada el 18 de octubre de 1982, fue escrita por Michael Jackson y producida por Quincy Jones y el propio Michael. El sencillo alcanzó el segundo puesto en la lista Billboard Hot 100 y llegó al octavo puesto en las listas británicas. La inspiración para este tema le llegó a Michael Jackson un día mientras veía la televisión junto a Paul McCartney. Posteriormente, en lugar de escribir la canción sobre papel, decidió registrarla en una grabadora casera, cantándola según iba surgiendo de su cabeza, para posteriormente trabajar en el estudio con este primer material.
El segundo sencillo de "Thriller" fue el titulado "Billie Jean", publicado el 2 de enero de 1983. "Billie Jean" se convirtió en uno de los sencillos más vendidos de dicho año y ayudó a catapultar las ventas del álbum. El sencillo se mantuvo en el primer puesto de la lista Billboard Hot 100 durante siete semanas. Las letras hablan de una mujer, Billie Jean, con la que el que cuenta la historia ha pasado una noche desenfrenada de amor y que, al poco tiempo, reclama la paternidad de un hijo, supuestamente fruto de dicha relación. Aunque no se confirmó, se especuló con la posibilidad de que la historia estuviera basada en vivencias reales del propio cantante.
El video debutó en la recientemente estrenada cadena musical MTV, en rotaciones constantes que aumentaron la popularidad del artista y de su obra. Dirigido por el realizador irlandés Steve Barron, nos muestra a un periodista persiguiendo al artista y que termina arrestado por espiar a una mujer, Billie Jean, entre cuyas sábanas supuestamente había estado poco antes Michael.
"Beat It" se publicó como tercer sencillo del álbum, el 14 de febrero de 1983. Escrita, al igual que las anteriores, por Michael Jackson y producida por Quincy Jones junto al propio Michael, se convirtió igualmente en un número uno, en gran medida por el vídeo musical, dirigido por Bob Giraldi. El tema está más en la onda del rock, contando con la colaboración del guitarrista de la banda de hard rock Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, que se marca un espectacular solo creado por él mismo para la ocasión.
El vídeo de "Beat It" elevó a Michael Jackson a los altares de los aficionados a la música y el baile. Un vídeo donde las coreografías, con la participación masiva de bailarines, resultaron de una vistosidad nunca vista hasta entonces. Rodado en Los Angeles, muestra a los miembros de dos pandillas callejeras, recreados por bailarines profesionales y pandilleros reales reclutados para el rodaje del vídeo.
El cuarto sencillo, "Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin", fue lanzado el 8 de mayo de 1983. Es el tema que abre también el álbum, una canción de seis minutos de duración de estilo bailable, compuesto por Michael Jackson originalmente para su hermana, La Toya, pero que Michael decidió grabar para el álbum "Off The Wall". Finalmente fue descartada en la selección definitiva y, tras regrabarla nuevamente, la incluyó en su álbum "Thriller". Las letras tratan sobre la prensa sensacionalista y las malas intenciones que habitan tras la propagación de falsos rumores.
"Human Nature, el quinto sencillo de este exitoso álbum, se publicó el 3 de julio de 1983. Compuesto por el teclista de la banda de rock Toto, Steve Porcaro, junto a John Bettis, contó con la producción, nuevamente, del rey midas de la música, Quincy Jones. La letra fue escrita por Porcaro tras una conversación con su hija, cuando al regresar ésta del colegio confiesa que un chico la había empujado. El padre razona los motivos por los que puede haber pasado eso y, una de ellas, le confiesa a su hija, es que así es la naturaleza humana.
El sexto sencillo, "PYT (Pretty Young Thing)", aparece en el mercado el 19 de septiembre de 1983. Fue escrito por el cantante y compositor ganador de dos Grammys, James Ingram, junto a Quincy Jones, con este último como productor único, Curiosamente, pese a haber alcanzado una buena posición en las listas de éxito (décimo lugar en la lista Billboard Hot 100), el artista nunca la interpretó en directo.
El séptimo y último sencillo del álbum es precisamente el que da título al disco, el sencillo titulado "Thriller". Este sencillo es conocido por su espectacular vídeo de 14 minutos rodado por el realizador estadounidense John Landis, conocido por haber rodado la comedia musical "The Blues Brothers", estrenada en 1980.
El vídeo "Thriller" muestra a Michael Jackson rodeado de zombies, con efectos sonoros como el chirriar de puertas en una ambientación de terror que hace de introducción al tema en sí. Durante las escenas que se suceden, Michael lidera el baile de un grupo de zombies en una coreografía entre divertida y terrorífica. El vídeo fue nominado para seis premios MTV Video Music Awards en 1984, de los cuales ganó tres.
