El tercer álbum de la banda Dire Straits, "Making Movies", fue lanzado el 17 de octubre de 1980 por la discográfica Vertigo, a excepción de Estados Unidos, donde fue distribuído por Warner Music. En las tareas de producción se unieron Mark Knopfler y el productor estadounidense James Iovine, cofundador del sello Interscope Records, quien se dio a conocer como ingeniero de sonido en discos de John Lennon y Bruce Springsteen ("Born to Run"), y que como productor ya destacó en el álbum "Rattle and Hum" del grupo U2.
Grabado en los estudios Power Station de Nueva York, el álbum alcanzó el cuarto puesto en las listas británicas de álbumes más vendidos y el 19 en las estadounidenses. En algunos países europeos, Italia entre ellos, se aupó en lo más alto de las listas nacionales.
Mark Knopfler comenzó a componer este álbum tras finalizar la gira de presentación de su anterior trabajo, "Communiqué". Knopfler se comunicó con el productor Jimmy Iovine, quien acababa de participar en la grabación del tema "Why the Night" de Patti Smith y que captó la atención del líder de Dire Straits. Iovine insistió en captar para las sesiones de grabación al teclista de la E. Street Band de Springsteen, Roy Bittan, cuyo trabajo fue fundamental para el sonido del álbum.
Al final de las sesiones, David Knopfler decidió abandonar la banda por las serias tensiones surgidas con su hermano. A pesar de que su trabajo estaba prácticamente concluído, Mark lo reescribió y lo volvió a grabar él mismo, por lo que, finalmente, el nombre de David no aparece en los créditos del disco.
El álbum se abre con el tema "Tunnel of Love", lanzado el 2 de octubre de 1981 y compuesto por Mark Knopfler, uno de los temas más conocidos de los Dire Straits pero que obtuvo un discreto puesto 54 en las listas británicas de sencillos. El tema apareció en la película "Oficial y Caballero" (1982), protagonizada por Richard Gere.
"Romeo and Juliet" fue el principal tema del álbum y el que consiguió mayor reconocimiento. Lanzado como sencillo el 9 de enero de 1981, ha aparecido siempre en los recopilatorios de la banda. Las letras, escritas por Mark Knopfler, están basadas de una manera libre en la obra de William Shakespeare y tratan de una mujer que utiliza a un hombre para adquirir renombre y a quien abandona tras conseguir su objetivo.
Supuestamente, la canción está basada en una relación de Knopfler con la cantante Holly Vincent, una relación que finalmente no llegó a fructificar
