Por qué nació este disco

Análisis del contenido
El principal atractivo de "Relics" es la inclusión de los primeros sencillos de Syd Barrett. Canciones como "Arnold Layne", sobre un travesti que roba ropa de mujer, y la pieza redonda del pop psicodélico "See Emily Play", son piezas fundamentales del "Verano del Amor" de 1967. El álbum también incluye la cara B "Paintbox", una composición de Richard Wright, y la atmosférica "Julia Dream" de Roger Waters.
Junto a los sencillos, el álbum presenta pistas de sus tres primeros LPs, como "Remember a Day" y "Careful with That Axe, Eugene". La gran sorpresa fue la inclusión de "Biding My Time", una composición de Waters de estilo jazz-blues grabada en 1969, que originalmente formaba parte de su suite conceptual en directo "The Man and The Journey". La portada del álbum es tan curiosa como su contenido. Fue dibujada por el propio Nick Mason y representa una fantástica máquina de cuatro cabezas, casi como un artilugio de Leonardo da Vinci, que parece generar música. Para la reedición en CD de 1995, Storm Thorgerson de Hipgnosis recreó el dibujo de Mason como una escultura real y la fotografió, dándole una nueva dimensión a la obra de arte original.
