Lanzado en 1979, Dynasty es el séptimo álbum de estudio de Kiss y, sin duda, uno de los más controvertidos de su carrera. Tras el audaz experimento de los álbumes en solitario, la banda se reunió para grabar un disco que marcó un giro radical hacia un sonido más comercial, pulido y fuertemente influenciado por la música disco. El álbum es famoso por contener el mayor éxito internacional de su carrera, el himno disco-rock "I Was Made for Lovin' You". Aunque "Dynasty" fue un éxito de ventas masivo que los mantuvo en la cima de las listas de éxitos, su sonido pop alienó a una gran parte de su base de fans del hard rock y marcó el comienzo de las tensiones que llevarían a la salida del batería Peter Criss, quien, a pesar de aparecer en la portada, apenas toca en el disco.

Contexto y Grabación

A finales de los 70, la música disco dominaba el mundo. Casablanca Records, el sello de Kiss, era también el hogar de estrellas del disco como Donna Summer y The Village People. El presidente del sello, Neil Bogart, presionó a la banda para que adoptara un sonido más comercial. Para ello, contrataron al productor Vini Poncia, quien había producido el exitoso álbum en solitario de Peter Criss y tenía una gran experiencia en el pop.

La grabación del álbum estuvo marcada por las divisiones internas. Peter Criss, lidiando con problemas de adicción y descontento creativo, fue considerado incapaz de tocar en la mayor parte del álbum. Fue reemplazado en secreto por el batería de sesión Anton Fig, quien también había tocado en el álbum en solitario de Ace Frehley. Criss solo toca en una canción, "Dirty Livin'". Este fue el principio del fin para la formación original.

Análisis Musical y Estilo

El sonido de "Dynasty" es una mezcla de hard rock con una producción de pop y disco. La influencia de Vini Poncia es evidente en los coros pulidos, el uso de teclados y los ritmos bailables. Es el álbum más "limpio" y comercial de su carrera hasta ese momento. Aunque hay temas de hard rock, el tono general es más ligero y orientado a la radio.
