"Caribou" es el octavo álbum de estudio de Elton John, lanzado en 1974. Grabado en un período de tiempo increíblemente corto (apenas nueve días) en medio de una gira mundial, el álbum es un testimonio de la increíble racha creativa y la presión que enfrentaba la banda en el apogeo de su fama. Aunque a menudo es considerado por la crítica (y por el propio Elton) como un trabajo menor en comparación con sus predecesores, "Caribou" fue otro éxito comercial masivo y contiene dos de sus canciones más icónicas y perdurables: la épica balada "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" y el descarado himno de rock and roll "The Bitch Is Back".
Antes de entrar al estudio
El álbum fue grabado en los Caribou Ranch studios en Colorado, de ahí su título. La banda estaba bajo una enorme presión para entregar un nuevo álbum rápidamente antes de embarcarse en una gira por Japón. Esta prisa se refleja en un sonido más directo y menos ornamentado que el de "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me": Una de las baladas más poderosas y aclamadas de su carrera. Con un arreglo de vientos majestuoso y una de las interpretaciones vocales más apasionadas de Elton, la canción Su dueto en directo con George Michael en 1991 le daría a la canción un segundo número uno.
"The Bitch Is Back": Un himno de glam rock autobiográfico y desafiante. Con un riff de guitarra potente y una letra descarada, la canción fue controvertida en su momento pero se convirtió en un pilar de sus conciertos.

"Caribou" fue otro éxito número uno instantáneo, alcanzando la cima de las listas en Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Canadá y Australia. En España, llegó al número 4. A pesar de su éxito comercial, la crítica fue más tibia, considerándolo un paso atrás en términos de ambición y consistencia en comparación con sus trabajos anteriores.
