Lanzado en 1987, Never Let Me Down es el decimoséptimo álbum de estudio de David Bowie. Es, para muchos críticos y para el propio Bowie, el punto más bajo de su carrera creativa. En un intento por reconciliar su estatus de superestrella del pop con sus raíces rockeras, Bowie creó un álbum de pop-rock con una producción grandilocuente y típicamente ochentera. El disco fue un éxito comercial masivo y dio lugar a la espectacular y teatral gira mundial "Glass Spider Tour". "Never Let Me Down" fue duramente criticado por su producción sobrecargada y su aparente falta de dirección artística, lo que llevó al propio Bowie a un período de profunda crisis creativa que lo impulsaría a formar la banda de hard rock Tin Machine para "limpiar su paladar artístico".
El origen del álbum
Tras la tibia recepción de "Tonight", Bowie quería volver a hacer un álbum de rock. La grabación se llevó a cabo en Suiza y Nueva York, con el productor David Richards. Bowie contó con la colaboración de su guitarrista de toda la vida, Carlos Alomar, y con el guitarrista Peter Frampton. El sonido final del álbum estuvo fuertemente influenciado por la estética de producción de los años 80: baterías con mucha reverberación, sintetizadores y un sonido general muy pulido y comercial, que a menudo ahogaba la energía de las canciones.
Estilo y propuesta sonora
El sonido de "Never Let Me Down" es una mezcla de pop-rock, hard rock y new wave. Es el sonido de los 80 en su máxima expresión, para bien y para mal. La producción es grandilocuente y a menudo abrumadora. Líricamente, el álbum explora temas de amor, alienación social y crítica política, pero sin la profundidad y la sutileza de sus mejores trabajos.
Las canciones clave
El primer sencillo, "Day-In Day-Out", es un tema de rock-funk con una letra sobre la indigencia. Su vídeo fue censurado en varios países por su contenido. "Time Will Crawl", inspirada en el desastre de Chernóbil, es considerada por el propio Bowie como la mejor canción del álbum. La canción que da título al disco, "Never Let Me Down", es una balada dedicada a su asistente personal, Coco Schwab. "Glass Spider" es una pieza de rock teatral que dio nombre a la gira.

La crítica especializada
La crítica fue en su mayoría muy negativa. El álbum fue duramente criticado por su producción sobrecargada y su falta de originalidad. Rolling Stone lo calificó de "un álbum caótico". El propio Bowie renegaría de este período de su carrera, considerándolo su "nadir" artístico. En 2018, el álbum fue completamente remezclado y regrabado para la caja recopilatoria "Loving the Alien (1983–1988)", en una nueva versión que fue mucho mejor recibida y que, según muchos, hizo justicia a las canciones originales.
