Lanzado en 1991, Tin Machine II es el segundo y último álbum de estudio de la banda de hard rock de David Bowie, Tin Machine. Tras la crudeza de su debut, este álbum presenta un sonido de hard rock más pulido y musicalmente más variado, aunque sin abandonar la energía y la experimentación que definían al proyecto. "Tin Machine II" es un disco más melódico y con una producción más sofisticada, que explora una gama más amplia de estilos, desde el rock and roll clásico hasta el art rock. De la idea al estudio
Después de una gira por pequeños clubes, Tin Machine se reunió para grabar su segundo álbum. Las sesiones de grabación, que tuvieron lugar en estudios de Sídney, Los Ángeles y Montreux, fueron de nuevo un proceso colaborativo, aunque las tensiones entre los miembros comenzaban a ser evidentes. La producción, a cargo de la propia banda junto a Tim Palmer y Hugh Padgham, buscó un sonido más refinado que el de su debut.
Sonido y estilo
El sonido de "Tin Machine II" es más diverso y menos abrasivo que el de su predecesor. Sigue siendo un álbum de hard rock y rock alternativo, pero con una mayor atención a las melodías y a los arreglos. La guitarra de Reeves Gabrels sigue siendo protagonista, pero de una manera más controlada y texturizada. El álbum incluye baladas más suaves y temas con una mayor complejidad armónica.
Análisis de las canciones
El primer sencillo, "You Belong in Rock n' Roll", es un pegadizo tema de rock and roll. "Baby Universal" es otro de los himnos de rock del disco. "One Shot" es una de las canciones más potentes y comerciales del álbum. La balada "Amlapura" muestra una influencia de la música indonesia. "Goodbye Mr. Ed" es uno de los temas más experimentales. El batería Hunt Sales canta en dos canciones, "Stateside" y "Sorry".
El diseño de la portada
La portada del álbum es una de las más controvertidas de la carrera de Bowie. Muestra cuatro estatuas griegas kouroi desnudas. En la versión estadounidense del álbum, los genitales de las estatuas fueron aerografiados para evitar la censura.
Estreno y resultados comerciales
El álbum fue un fracaso comercial, con ventas significativamente más bajas que su predecesor, lo que aceleró el final de la banda.
